Wine Brief--Labeling

Introduction:

"Wine is a very technical subject, but once you put the effort in, your reward is a greater appreciation for that wonderful glass of wine you're drinking. Wine is culture; it is history, and pleasure like great food. It is one of the things that makes life worth living-a feast for the senses, a creative inspiration and a spiritual beverage that encourages us to be better people. It is all in how you use it. You are now officially inducted into the brotherhood and sisterhood of wine. Health, wealth and happiness to you!" Anita L. LaRaia

Learning Objective:

Familiarize yourself with the 3 types of wine labels and you will in time be able to read any wine label in the world, including combination labels.

There are three types of wine labels:
  1. Varietal labels that name the grape variety (or varieties) used to make the wine;

  2. Controlled Name of Origin labels that name the place-each place has its own "terroir" or geography, soil, climate-where the grapes are grown;

  3. Levels of Quality Based on Natural Sugar Content labels that establish categories from dry to sweet.
